Yes, convincing that it is fun. I saw a couple of UT2k4 CTF4 videos, one was on Face, the other on a similarly looking spacey map with holes all around between the bases to fall through and die. Thing is, neither convinced me there're maps out there that have been given substantial thought to accomodate CTF4 specifically besides the "take CTF map, transpose by 90° on top, export" method you mentioned. So until I see something more convincing, this game "mode" remains a kludge for me.

Also, what exactly is the appeal of iCTF anyway? Do away with a dozen (plus) weapons designed for variety, narrow down the necessary skillset for survival and victory to hitscans and just give the advantage to the lowest pinger... sounds fun!
Eyes in the skies.

It all depends on your taste.
For instance, there is a CTF4 Joust. Some just love Joust and would find this very attractive. Other people just hate Joust and would think the CTF4 version is not even worth a try.

I am on a laptop for a few days so I don't have CTF4 installed and hence can't play the maps I have.
But anyway, from what I have seen here, IIRC, CTF4-Geothermal is not in the 90° category.

As for iCTF, also personal preference:

1) It removes the use of weapon pickups and the vexed issue of weapon stay on or off. I have often read some people saying they prefer AM/TAM to DM/TDM notably for having all weapons at start.

You can easily imagine people spending the whole game going to all the weapons pickups to get a full armament, camping around the shield/keg pickups if there are some, then heading to the DD/redeeemer pickup if there are some to finally try to do a flag run.
Not doing anything for the team for a few minutes...

When I don't play ONS, I often play VCTF on the Vehicle Masters server. While there is not too much of this kind of behaviour, notably because vehicle tend to lower the benefits of those pickups, I have seen some players doing this kind of circling/camping instead of anything useful.

Instagib removes this issue. Of course, there can still be health/shied pickups, but they serve to heal after falls.

2) Best pinger etc...

Well, I mostly play CTF4 offline so ping does not matter.

Besides, although of course too wide a ping difference is certainly an issue, I have not always seen the best pinger be the best player of top fragger when I play either iVCTF (look in the game browser at VCTF for a server called Digiex) or the few times I tried plain iCTF (don't remember the server name though).

As for skillset, it is very different from traditional CTF.

If translocators are allowed and players now a bit how to use the xloc wisely, it can be quite difficult to hit any player.

In the other case, if you are going for the flag:

- either you have a full adren. and start the speed combo. In this case, you will likely try to take the most erratic path so that people can anticipate where you will move.

- most often, you will go for the running backwards to bring the flag back to your base method.
This requires a specific skill: mentally knowing where you are in the map while facing the other direction. Needless to say that if you don't bother to turn around from time to time to check where you are, you fall quite often in CTF4-Face.
The big advantage is that you can hit your pursuers as soon as you see them.

Of course, you also need to in a manner that is difficult to anticipate.

I believe it gives another way of thinking and moving too. Although, I have seen that too in VCTF, I believe it really becomes a necessity in iCTF. For instance, when entering an enemy base, instead of going for the flag directly (unless you have the Speed combo) you'd rather spend a few seconds around to see eliminate any defender that would shoot you as soon as you would grab the flag.

The same goes for capturing the flag. If you go straight to your flag, you are likely to be shot in a 'last second save' (and all other members of your team will too if they try to pick up the flag)

I won in Conflict: Alpha Three (and also in Project: Alpha Three too I killed the boss b****) and it was short :/ Just one map with no submaps/dungeons. Is it really done??? Or will there be a third part? By the way there is not even a word of the story of Project: Alpha Three. Conflict: Alpha Three is just a Conflict. Anyways, did we (the team) complete our mission? It says the train goes in the Capital city... I don't understand why they couldn't make the Capital city in the same game on a different map...

Also our mission is to destroy the communication center of the skaarj...
I guess it is in the capital city.

I didn't play it yet to be honest, I haven't even finished Project Alpha Three yet, it seemed quite huge to me.

Currently I found the human base there and eliminated that radioactive Skaarj and got the armor for that quest (I also stepped into two dungeons already and killed the Titan before the Skaarj-attack on the base.

I am curious how it will end. Maybe there will be a sequel, I think the mod hasn't been finished such a long time ago.

oh, I thought you played out both
watch out when planning an assault on the skaarj base, kill the "skaarj army" one by one, and don't worry, you can save the game inside skaarj base.

I am downloading it via BitTorrent now, the only problem is that only one player has downloaded more than me already, so I am mostly seeding and have to wait 2,5 hours to play…

Played it already and was really scared in the beginning (shouldn't play it after midnight) but when you got some weapons and discover the story, then it's really great.

I am in the third level now and that one is quite big because you always have to go back to places where you have been before.

The only problem is, that I got stuck somewhere between a crate and a wall and had no chance to free myself (cheats like God, Fly and Ghost do not work) and the savepoints are only at the begin of each level, so I have to do it all again although I was almost finished with that level.

And the performance... well, I am using middle details and get sometimes only about 20 FPS with my machine just by looking at the scene.
But when keeping in mind that this is still the Unreal Engine 2 then you have to admit that the places are full of details where the author really proved that he knows how to let a scene look organic. Absolutely every place you visit looks like it could have actually be taken from a real city, you never get the feeling that a corner is "empty".
