Besides the problems mentioned and since the server's biggest problem at the moment is to gather a starting base of people to fill it up (since nobody wants to play against bots):
A few days ago, while playing TF2 on one of the UKCS servers, I noticed a nice mechanic that they are using to get the server kinda filled (the players in question are informed about that with an ingame notification): The first five players to join the server when it's empty will receive a temporary premium account (reserved slots) on all the UKCS servers if they stay on the server until it fills up to 20 players. The premium account lasts until that particular server is completely empty again. While we don't have any other servers that are always full and thus don't have any (at the moment) really valuable premium slots, I still appreciate the basic idea of giving a temporary reward to the players who stay to fill the server up. Another way of filling the server up would be to have an alternative gametype that is also fun with less people that required for ONS, but which would be only available below a certain playercount. Once the number of players (including spectators) exceeds a set amount, the next map to be voted has to be an ONS map again. If the player number shrinks below the amount again, the other gametype becomes available as well (but ONS is always available, in case someone wants to keep playing that with less people). I don't know if such a Mutator/mod already exists, though. But it might be in the feature list of UT2Vote, though I am not sure. ![]() |

nice idea (as usual) crush! though hard to realize i guess... especially concerning the sort or reward one gets.
today i observed the following: we had a very good and long balanced (!) match going on on bridge, all ppl talking in the chat how great that was and stuff, forgetting to vote for the next map... KOT, who did not participate in the chat, and some other guy voted for "avalanche", which then won against my single vote, --> map loads and immediately drops the player count to 10, everyone (who was still there) wanted to change the map but couldn't since regulars have no admin/forcemapswitch-rights and newbies somehow don't find the map voting button or can't read (since we explained how to vote)... so we had to play the map and did and of course one mastermind destroyed the core before 10mins and therefore forced another round, which made even more players migrating to ceonss or its.nl ... we are losing ground (although gaining stability lag-wise) quickly and besides our unique maps thx to VK there is very little reason to draw players' attention to TC nowadays anymore. that's sad! the colored names thingy and stuff got us a boost as far as I can tell... that being said, it is in fact pointing out players want to be more individual i.e. standing out, also optically! which brings me back to crusha's idea long before with custom player/vehicle skins (like golden) - unfortunately since everyone can change the enemy's appearance now, this would be senseless cuz nobody sees it =/ VKs take on the RELICS is also much liked, makes his maps stand out and thats why they are voted often... besides the spammy feeling and rocket nubs hitting something and doing quite good there ![]() mapwise I still miss spacejox and pandemonium and even mass destruction!, and I honestly can't think of a reason you put biggerbeerbattle back on but not spacejox foib O.o the IGS-grendelkeep onslaught-port is also something for a change! funnier than alien hop or denum for the most.... I don't know what's your plan if you have one concerning the future of TC... but it would be very very sad if it got the same fate as ZipCity.... ![]()

Well, it would not be very hard to code something that takes care of notifying the players about this "the-first-five-players-stay-until-20-players-are-on-the-server-for-temporary-premium-account"-thingy and about checking that condition and writing the player into the server log that fulfilled the condition, so Foib could add them manually. But that would also mean an additional amount of workload on the admin side to add and remove the temporary guys.

Agrea.
- removing the realy bad maps would help also, they kill the players. Like thom said after à great match, we are talking and forget to vote. From 1m to 1.30 time is better. |

Though a too long vote period (if no decision is made, and many people have the habit to only vote in the last second) may put people off as well. But it's not as extreme in UT as it is in other games because here it's a welcomed time out from the lot of nonstop adrenaline experience that you got during the regular match.
